Museum Summer Student

This exciting position as a Merrickville Blockhouse Interpreter will give you the opportunity to explain our heritage to the over 10,000 visitors from across Canada and around the world who visit Merrickville-Wolford each summer. During summer 2024, there are several special events planned in Merrickville-Wolford which interpreters will be expected to attend.

The Merrickville Blockhouse Museum is a unique heritage structure, built as part of the Rideau Canal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The museum contains a large collection of local artefacts and specially constructed displays which feature the history of Merrickville-Wolford and the history of the Rideau Canal. Interpreters work as a team to learn the history and culture of the area and make it "come alive" as a rich experience for visitors. You will also help manage the museum and gain experience in assessing and delivering museum programs.

If you are looking for a job to use your interpersonal skills, enthusiasm and judgement to help "bring history alive," this might be the position for you.

Candidates should be competent in both official languages and meet the Young Canada Works program student eligibility criteria. Preference may be given to candidates who self identify as LGBTQ2S, Indigenous, visible minority or new Canadian youth. Candidates should have strong communication skills, enthusiasm for working with the general public and a background or special interest in history, heritage, museum or curatorial studies or hospitality and tourism.
