We are seeking a passionate and driven Museum Supervisor to lead and inspire our team of student workers at the Blockhouse Museum in the beautiful village of Merrickville, Ontario. The Merrickville Blockhouse Museum (https://www.merrickvillehistory.org/) is a unique heritage structure, built as part of the Rideau Canal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The museum contains a large collection of local artefacts and specially constructed displays which feature the history of Merrickville Wolford and the history of the Rideau Canal. The Blockhouse, the largest of four constructed on the Rideau Canal is a designated National Historic Site with approximately 10,000 visitors/year.
As the Museum Supervisor, you will:
● oversee the day-to-day operations of the museum
● recruit and support staff while delivering exceptional visitor experiences
● manage administrative tasks
● coordinate staff scheduling and payroll
● plan and execute 2 special events
● contribute to research projects that will enhance the museum’s programming and community engagement
● other duties as assigned
Candidates should be competent in both official languages and meet the Young Canada
Works program student eligibility criteria. Preference may be given to candidates self
identifying as Aboriginal youth, visible minorities and new Canadians.
The ideal candidate will hold or be in the process of completing a degree in museum studies, history, cultural heritage, or a related field and demonstrate a strong passion for sharing history and culture with the public. Prior experience in museum work, cultural programming, or visitor engagement is required. Strong leadership skills are equally essential, as you will be responsible for supervising and motivating a team of peers, providing guidance, and fostering a collaborative and positive work environment.
Excellent communication and organizational skills are key to this role. You should be comfortable managing scheduling, maintaining records, and handling daily administrative responsibilities. Additionally, you should have a customer-focused mindset, with the ability to engage effectively with both staff and visitors. A proactive attitude, creative problem-solving skills, and a commitment to enhancing the museum’s reputation and impact within the community will set you apart.
Period of work: May 26, 2025 - Sept 5, 2025 (pending approval of YCW funding application)
Hours of work: 9am-5pm, may include weekends and some evenings.
Wage: $21.50/hr
