Reports To: Public Works Manager and Lead Hand

Position Summary:
Responsible for performing maintenance of the municipality’s infrastructure and operation of Public Works equipment, including repair, maintenance, replacement and upkeep of all roads, sidewalks, structures, and municipal facilities.
Wage Range:
The wage range for this position is $27.46 - $33.41/hr.
Roles and Responsibilities:
- Perform duties assigned by the Manager, Operations and/or Lead Hand
- Operates various pieces of municipal road maintenance equipment such as graders, backhoes, front end loaders and plough/haul trucks, snow removal, sanding, culvert installation, gravel application, pavement patching, and other road maintenance work.
- Performs daily maintenance and checks on equipment and report any major repairs that may be required.
- Perform maintenance of roadside and other municipally owned properties, including signage, litter pick-up, tree-planting, trimming and removal, and grass cutting.
- Maintains a daily log for equipment used, recording fuel oil and parts used, the time required to complete individual assignments and completes daily timesheets.
- Winter Snow-plow operations, weekdays and weekends as required based on snow / winter weather events.
- Report any adverse road conditions to lead hand.
- Install culverts and clears drainage ways when they are impeded by ice or debris.
- Hauls and places aggregate materials, gravel and cold mix, and patches roads.
- Perform work on Public Works construction projects.
- Perform maintenance on all structures, buildings, and municipal facilities.
- Perform maintenance on recreational lands, areas, and facilities.
- Perform winter maintenance of the road system, including sidewalks and parking lots by operating municipal equipment as required, including evenings and weekends as required.
- Develops a thorough working knowledge of the Municipality’s Safety Policies and Procedures Manual and applicable Provincial Legislation listed therein.
- Completes daily time sheets.
- Always adheres to safety regulations and ensures that these regulations are implemented by staff.
- May be required to perform general maintenance duties at landfill sites.
- May be required to act as our Landfill Attendant / Rink Attendant / Crossing Guard if needed.
- Required to attend relevant training sessions on the recommendation of the Manager.
- Other duties, as assigned.
The above generally describes the duties involved with the position, however, municipal work is varied in nature. Employees will be required to perform duties in addition to the above (from time to time) as directed by the Manager, Operations or Lead Hand.

All employees must adhere to the Health and Safety policy and comply with the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
Working Conditions:
- Hours of Work: This position is Monday to Friday 7:00am to 3:30pm day shift, but overtime and unusual hours are required to respond to emergencies and poor weather conditions.
- Environmental Conditions: This position involves all weather conditions ranging from very cold to hot and humid. A substantial portion of the incumbent’s responsibilities are performed outdoors, involving exposure to adverse weather conditions.
- Mental Demands: Must be able to complete tasks in a timely manner. All Public Works staff must be able to effectively interact with co-workers and management, as well as with the public and other interested parties in a courteous and respectful manner. The employee must be able to exercise judgement when working without direct supervision once the task has been outlined by the Manager or Lead Hand, notify the Manager or Lead Hand of any operational problems or issues, and ensure work is carried out to quality standards established by the Corporation of the Village of Merrickville-Wolford.
Position Requirements:
- Class DZ Ontario Driver’s License (will be required to provide abstract and provide ongoing confirmation of appropriate license).
- Extensive experience with Grader, Backhoe and dump truck/ snow plow operations.
- Must possess and provide a clear police background check.
- The ability to operate all municipality owned equipment.
- General knowledge of municipal maintenance and construction techniques.
- Three to five years directly related experience.
- Good physical condition required to handle job demands and operate machinery.
- Impeccable judgement to ensure that municipal standards, safety procedures and regulations are being met.
- Ability to respond to emergencies, when designated, within reasonable timeframe as detailed from the Lead Hand or Manager”.
- The employee is regularly required to stand, sit and walk on a wide range of surfaces. They will also be required to use hands, reach of arms, climb, or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and talk or hear. The ability to lift up to 30 kg unassisted and carry it 100 metres is required.
- The employee is required to use manual and powered pneumatic, hydraulic, gas and electrically powered tools and equipment, vision abilities include both close and distance vision, colour vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
- Mileage will not be paid for call ins.
- Ontario secondary school diploma (OSSD) or equivalent is required.
Control Over Work Schedule:
- Schedule is made by the Manager and normal work week shall be extended as required.
- Winter maintenance / plowing operations are subject to possible overtime and the hours are adjusted based on weather events.
- Normal work hours are 7am to 3:30 pm Monday to Friday, but work may be required beyond usual hours to respond to evening and weekend emergencies.
