New Carbon Monoxide (CO) alarm rules in effect January 1 2026

The updated Fire Code significantly expands where Carbon Monoxide (CO) alarms must be installed,
focusing on greater safety in high-risk areas:
Existing Homes:  Alarms will be mandatory on every storey of the dwelling, moving beyond the
current requirments of only being near sleeping areas.
Multi-Unit Residential Buildings:  CO Alarms will be required in all applicable suites, service rooms,
and, in specific cases, public corridors.
Care Opportunities:  Facilities like residential care and certain group homes must install CO alarms
in both suites and common areas to protect vulnerable residents.
