IESO Update - Long-Lead Time RFP Procurement Upcoming Milestones

The Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) is continuing to advance the Long Lead-Time Request for Proposals (LLT RFP), which is intended to procure new hydroelectric generation and long-duration energy storage projects that require more than five years to develop. These resources will help meet Ontario's growing electricity needs and successful projects will be offered 40-year contracts.

As part of the procurement process, the IESO has posted responses to submitted stakeholder questions and comments, and updated procurement and contract documents for both the energy and capacity streams. These materials are available on the LLT RFP website

With the procurement now moving toward registration in September/October and the proposal submission deadline of November 26th approaching, municipalities in areas with potential hydroelectric generation or long-duration energy storage opportunities may continue to receive outreach from project proponents. In many cases, proponents may have already begun engaging with municipalities and communities earlier this year as they assess potential project opportunities and support requirements.

There are no changes to the role municipalities play in the LLT RFP process. Municipal support and engagement requirements remain consistent, and municipalities continue to play an important role where projects are proposed.
