NEW SAFETY REQUIREMENTS STARTING JANUARY 1, 2026...The updated Fire Code significantly expands where CO Alarms must be installed, focusing on greater safety in high-risk areas:
EXISTING HOMES; Alarms will be mandatory on every storey of the dwelling, moving beyond the current requirement of only being near sleeping areas.
MULTI-UNIT RESIDENTIAL BUILDINGS; CO Alarms will be required in all applicable suites, service rooms, and in specific cases, public corridors.
CARE OCCUPANCIES; Facilities like residential care and certain group homes must install CO Alarms in both suites and common areas to protect vulnerable residents.
